Day 13 - Continuing through the Westfjords

Continue on the stunning coastal roads of the Westfjords. Stop at the cascading waterfall of Dynjandi and through the tiny village of Thingeyri, which as the great cafe called Simbahollin which specialising in Belgian Waffles. Continue onwards to the quaint little town of Suðureyri where you ́ll be spending the night

The day was shortened as the way up to the wildlife refuge was too rough for my car. I would have needed a 4 wheel drive, so there was no rush and it should have been a relaxing day.

I had to wait around for breakfast and finally shoved off towards the Dynjandi Falls. The weather was closing in and I wanted to get going. The road wasn't paved, so I had to go slower. As I got up to pass, visibility was very poor and road works were under way. There were no lights, very few signs, and the road quality was VERY bad - lots of big potholes.

To make matters worse, at one point a large truck was coming at me and the road was very narrow. Eventually I got through the bad area and came down the hills towards the falls. I was very glad to finally park and peel my hands off the steering wheel.

There was a hike up to the Falls viewing point - of course I had to do this hike too. It wasn't a difficult hike up, but I had to go very slowly coming down. It was a beautiful waterfall.

After the Falls, I drove to lunch at the cafe Simbahollin in Thingeyri, and had the most wonderful soup, waffles and hot cocoa.

After lunch I walked through the town and found a shop with locally knit sweaters. This is where I bought James' Christmas present:)

After lunch I drove towards Suðureyri and some paved roads. On the way I went through my first Icelandic tunnel. It was amazing - carved through the mountains and it was a very long tunnel - several minutes of driving in the dark.

On the other side I met some black sheep along the road who came to say "hi".

I spent the night at the Fisherman Hotel in Suðureyri
