Day 14 - Deeper into the Westfjords

From the Itinerary: Leave Isafjordur in the morning and drive through the beautiful fjords, and over the Steingrimsfjordur mountain pass. Stop in the town of Holmavik for a rest-stop and where you can visit the very interesting Museum of Witchcraft and Sorcery. Then head over to the village of Drangsnes for their unique hot spring and pool located by the coast, offering incredible views over the fjord. Overnight in Holmavik.

Today was a fun day and not so long and no hiking, so my ankle got a rest. Today I reached the North-Western most part of the island.

I left pretty early and ended up at the Museum of Witchcraft and Sorcery at about 10am. To get there I went through the first road tunnel in Iceland - Arnarneshamar - started in 1933 between the towns ofIsafjordur and Sudavik. The tunnel was finally finished in 1946. It was widened over time and finally finished in 1995.

Weather was good and most roads were paved.

The Museum was interesting and included a "man suit". It was too early for lunch, but I did have a nice coffee and snack.

Even in summer these fjords were very remote and during winter would be very isolated. The towns were small and mostly fishing villages. Like something out of the Aquaman movies.

In Sudavik I visited the Arctic Fox Center that had some actual arctic fox babies in the back and very cute they were too.

In the late afternoon I got tot he Malarhorn Gesthouse in Holmavik and was able to get reservations at Cafe Riis where I started a tradition of trying a local beer with dinner.
