Leave Raufarhö fn and head down towards the Langanes peninsula, passing through small communities like Þó rshö fn and Bakkfjö rður. From Þó rshö fn head out on the Langanes peninsula for some off-the-beaten-path experience. At the very end of the Langanes road you ́ll find a special viewpoint which allows you to walk over the edge of the cliff, so you get a birds eye view of the beach and the vibrant birdlife in the area. Afterwards continue down south to the main town of the East of Iceland - Egilstadir for your overnight stay.
The day started out overcast and the road was unpaved, large gravel and washboard bumps - the kind you go over either very quickly or very slowly - but if you go in between these speeds the road is really bumpy. The only thing around were some sheep.
Most of the day was very isolated. I drove by a clapboard house that looked like it might blow away.
I didn't go to the viewpoint. The sky was overcaste and foggy - hence no view - and the Langanes road was very bad (big gravel and washboard), very slow going, and very isolated. It was the first and only time I turned around and missed doing something on this itinerary. Here are some pictures from the road
After I turned around and continued on the main route, I found the road got better and I was making good time. I took a break at a bridge and had a look at the river below:
Carrying on, I found this lovely waterfall
My stop for the night was Hotel 1001 in Egilstadir. I have now traveled 3/4 of the way around Iceland! I have 2 nights in this hotel, so it will be nice to have a few days to "put down some roots".
