Day 20 - Lake Lagarfljot and chasing waterfalls - July 29, 2021

On a quiet and relaxing day, you can drive along the Lagarfljot river and to the trailhead of Hengifoss trail. Hengifoss is one of the highest waterfalls in Iceland, measuring 128 m falling from the plateau into a magnificent gorge. There is a colorful rock face surrounding the waterfall showing different layers from volcanic eruptions in the Tertiary period when Iceland was formed. It takes 40-60 minutes to walk from the parking lot to waterfall. On the way is another astonishing waterfall called Litlanesfoss. It is crowned by exceptional high basalt columns making it totally unique and photogenic. If not in for a hike then you can visit the History and Cultural centre at Skriduklaustur for a visit to their exhibition, or enjoy their charming café . Overnight in Egilstadir

This is my second day in Egilstadir and today was very relaxing. It was a nice drive to the waterfall and a relaxing walk up the 2 mile path to its base.

I managed to have a bit of quiet time at the falls before others came by. This area has been protected from livestock grazing, so is very lush. It formerly provided outlaws with a hideout and now is a habitat for geese.

After seeing both falls and the lava rock formations which reminded me of the giant's causeway, I drove back to the history center at Skriduklaustur and had lunch at their cafe. There were a lot of local specialities at the buffet - unfortunately, no pictures:(

Then back to the hotel for dinner.
