Day 27 - Meeting the Local Police

Updated: Nov 5, 2022

From the itinerary - You ́ve finished now your circle around the country, and what a tour it has been. You can enjoy sleeping in this morning and the comforts of your luxury hotel. In the mid-afternoon head on over to the suburb town of Kopavogur where you find the newly opened and beautiful SkyLagoon spa. A thermal spa inspired by nature and culture, the SkyLagoon features an infinity pool which stretches out to the Atlantic Ocean, and a 7-step bathing ritual inspired by close relationship and love that Icelanders have had of their warm water and geothermal sources.

The day started badly. I went to pick up the car and noticed the seat was too far back. I realized the car had been broken into and both the wifi gadgets were taken. Why I didn't take them upstairs I don't know - I remember thinking I should, but they weren't visible and I was told theft was very rare in Iceland. Anyway, lesson learned. To make matters worse, I was very upset when I noticed the theft and as I backed out of the parking space I hit the concrete pillar on the driver's side. UNBELIEVABLE!. Another lesson learned - don't drive if at all upset. I was able to push the side view mirror housing back on, but there was a dent in the left front quarter-panel that I wouldn't be able to do anything about. Luckily I had the full insurance on the car for that. I spent about an hour making a police report for insurance purposes - the theft of the WIFI devices weren't covered under insurance and the police didn't recover them. Put a damper on the day.

The SkyLagoon was probably my favorite and I can see why it's popular. Included in the price were two drinks from the in-pool bar and the view out onto the sea was beautiful. The 7-step bathing ritual was kind of fun - I can't remember all the steps, but in included a salt scrub, hot and cold running mist, and sauna.

It was here that I realized I didn't receive a printed Covid result and frantically had to work out how to get it in time for my return trip. I don't remember how I managed to do this via my mobile phone (no local sim) in a country where I didn't speak the language and didn't understand the public health bureaucracy. I was frantic for awhile, but finally managed it. It rather ruined the lagoon experience.

This is my last night in Reykjavik and I walked over to a very nice restaurant. Along the way I saw an interesting sculpture and a pub that Sasha may want to try.

I had a very expensive and wonderful meal at the Fish Company - reported to be the best fish restaurant in Reykjavik - to make up for the horrible start of the day.

By the end of today I was looking forward to getting back to England and felt like this trip was a bit of a mistake.
