Day 28 - Lava Cave and Blue Lagoon

From the itinerary: For your final day of exploration in Iceland you will discover the powerful geology and barren lunar landscapes of the Reykjanes peninsula. Leave the city to the east and towards the town of Þorlákshöfn. Soon you ́ll find the site of one of the worlds longest mapped lava tunnel, the Raufarholshellir cave. Here you ́ll be joining a guided tour which provides you with a unique experience and opportunity to witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption as one walks in the path of lava that flowed during the Leitahraun eruption, which occured east of the Blafjoll mountains about 5200 years ago. After your caving tour, connect to the southern road of the Reykjanes peninsula for further adventures. Take a detour and follow the road along the beautiful shores of Lake Kleifarvatn and until you get to the geothermal field of Seltú n where you find hissing steam vents and bubbling mud pools aplenty. Continue to the southern side of the peninsula and turn right towards Grindavik on road #427. From Grindavik make your way to the unique geothermal spa known as the Blue Lagoon. After an active holiday in Iceland this will be a welcomed treat. Allow yourself to bask and relax in the silica rich and milky white waters of this natural wonder. Passing through Grindavík again head onto road #425 and visit the geothermal field of Gunnuhver which is next to one of Iceland ́s largest geothermal power plants. Then go to the Reykjanes lighthouse for some oceanside views before going to the Bridge between Continents where you can see evidence of the tectonic plates drifting apart. Finally, make your way to your hotel in Keflavik for a final night in Iceland.

I'm on a tight schedule today since I have to be at the Blue Lagoon for 3pm. I sadly have to check out of Hotel Borg since my last night is at the Airport Hotel. The room for my second stay at the Borg was twice the size of the first one - much nicer.

The lava tube was an interesting subterranean experience. It was lighted up as a movie set and there were a lot of colors. Top side it was as if you were in the middle of nowhere.

Geothermal field of Seltún had a lot of activity with hot pots and sulfer springs

Then on to the Reykjanes lighthouse. The road to the lighthouse was actually more interesting than the lighthouse itself. There were a ton of seabirds that just sat on the road and didn't want to move as you drove. I had to drive very slowly:)

Immediately after this I was off to the Blue Lagoon.

This was quite unique in that it had a white clay bottom which was squishy on the toes. The entrance fee included a drink from the in-lagoon bar and a clay masque made from the clay inwhich the lagoon was situated. I had to leave this nice spot to drive back to Reykjavik and to Keflavik Airport where I spent my last night.
