Iceland Day 8: Up the Fimmvörðuháls Hiking Trail

Updated: Oct 4, 2022

July 17, 2021. Last day of this painful hike and my heart is not in it. The weather is wonderful, so I try. Gully has decided we will not go all the way up to the top of the pass. It is about a 2 mile hike along gravel to the trailhead.

We cross a mobile bridge over the river Krossá which is cool. The rough road is hard on my ankle. We finally start going up and it is hard. It is hard to breath. I tweak my ankle and decide this is enough, but I continue anyway and it is beautiful.

There is a lovely gorge and we cross the cat's spine and some very interesting areas which are rather vertical.

Anyway, we make it up to the top of the volcanic heath Morinsheiði which is relatively flat and is welcomed after the steep way there. I had some help taking some artistic and pensive shots.

The views are excellent, reaching over Mýrdalsjökull and Gígjökull glaciers,

but we do not hike up to the top between Magni and Mothi craters. Gully says there's not much to see there and, after the volcano hike debacle, I will believe the guide from now on.

Along the way we see some pretty flowers

Coming down is harder on my ankle

Anyway, I make it back to the hut after an 8.8 mile hike. I am dead last and am SO DONE with all this hiking. Tomorrow is another hike up a peak which I think I will not do.

Before dinner I go for a shower at the shower cabins and get a drink at the small cafe where I see a poster with all the medicinal plants on it. Gully makes traditional BBQ lamb for our last meal and I buy him a beer.

I am so ready to leave this group.
