Kylemore Abbey - Benedictine Monastery

Founded in 1920 on the grounds of Kylemore Castle, The Abbey was founded for Benedictine Nuns who fled Belgium in World War I. Kylemore Castle was originally built as a private home for Mitchell Henry and his wife. The Henrys, who are said to have fallen in love with the area while on honeymoon in Ireland, owned the castle until 1903. He sold it to the Duke/Duchess of Manchester after the death of his wife in Egypt. It was sold in 1920 to the Nuns to settle gambling debts.

The pictures were taken on an aborted hike. It was probably one of the boggiest, wettest we took to date and was miserable.
