Lago Chico

We had our first hike in Patagonia was on 3/14/22 to Lago Chico - small lake. Breakfast was typical Explora - half cooked eggs:), but they have a wonderful pastry chef.

Our guide to Lago Chico was Joaquim who is from Spain. It was a full day hike, 7.3 miles, and the weather was very windy and cool. The hike goes around the edge of Lago Chico, where forests, lagoons and ravines intertwine. There were great views of Lake Cochrane and Cerro Oportus. At Lake Cochrane you can see over to Argentina. We saw various plants and trees - Calafate, beech, old man's beard, and Hierba, to name a few. There was even one that helps with impotence, but I didn't get the name and can't find it online. In terms of fauna, we saw a black chested buzzard eagle flying around, 2 guanacos alone and near a forest which was unusual, there was evidence of pumas, a carcass from a dead guanaco and horse bones. Later we saw a condor soaring and heard parakeets. On the return we saw a flicker woodpecker. Joaquim confirmed there is less rain/snow than 40 years ago.

When we got back there was a beautiful sunset/moonrise during our dinner. I had salad and cooked carrots. Chris had pork and lasagna and he didn't like the lasagna. I got up at 4:30 after moonset and saw beautiful stars and the Milkyway.
