The entrance to the Gorge is along the main road to the Serengeti National Park, so we passed it several times over the last days. It is marked by a sculpture of castes of early man skulls at the top. I am excited to finally turn into the entrance to this park.
"Olduvai" originates from the Maasai word "Oldupai" which means "the place of wild Sisal" (Agave) of which there are a lot in the area.
There are two main areas: one is the actual gorge which has a shaded seating area, and the other is the museum. This is my picture, together with my driver, Prospero.
The gorge itself is rather unremarkable, but it was interesting to me because of its color variants and to be able to watch the local tribes wander as they like with their animals (they are not restricted to certain paths or areas). Perhaps this view is much as it was millions of years ago.
After looking around I sat and imagined the Leakeys, and their crews, digging under the unrelenting sun and finding the artifacts about which I read so much.
A walk around the museum finished fulfilling my curiosity. Most interesting was the plaster castes of the footprints of ancient man walking through the valley.
Now on to Ngorongoro Crater
